It's an open-air museum with reconstructed (actual, not lego/air-fix models) houses moved from vilages around the region and kept there for posterity. Whilst trying out some new techniques in Paintshop Pro X, I ended up with this image. It seemed rather more atmospheric than the original (which was itself not bad), and so I started a hunt for a decent quote to add to it to submit it to a group on Flickr that deals with Images associated with Literary Quotes. I ended up stumbling on a play/dramatic poem by Ibsen (whether a play or dramatic poem depends on the particular translation you find) which seems to fit perfectly. Click on the image to get the links to Project Guttenberg and the relevant Wikipedia articles.

This is one of the photos we took in the Hebrides this Christmas. It's a hill near An t-Obb in Harris, reflected perfectly in a loch, with a little mist floating by. It seems to be one of my most successful pictures in Flickr, very few views, but lots and lots of good comments and favourites.

After being back in Aberdeen for a month, I have finally completed fiddling with, uploading and preparing all 550(ish) of the photographs I took while in the Hebrides over Christmas. So, here's the one of the best of the last of those images... There will be a special gallery of these photos on here soon, but we have to do the same to Agnieszka's photos now. The new, special, gallery will contain photographs from us both. Indirectly, that is the reason for the new-look to the site. Photographs just look better on Black or White, and they're already on White on Flickr, so Black it was.

This is, by far, both my favourite doctored image so far, and my most successful one on Flickr. In under a week, it has been favourited 15 times (second to a photo favourited 17 times over several months), commented on 12 times (better than any other) and 2nd in my most interesting list already. Unlike previous photos where I had a comment in mind, then designed the image, here, I fiddled with the picture until I got a great atmosphere, then searched for a text on Google Print, settling on a piece by Zola. I have included the text below...

Castle Dracula

I had rather an interesting day today. I woke up rather earlier than I'd planned and was stunned to see a clear blue sky. My plans to go and see Episode 3 again (good but ropey acting) were thrust aside as I decided there was only one thing that a day like this could require - a trip out of the city for a nice walk and the chance to take some photos.

I seem to be getting rather addicted to Flickr (and strongly recomend you get yourself an account there and start Flickring) and posted quite a few photos from my trip. As this was an unplanned trip, I had to see where was within reasonable travelling distance. My number one choice requires over 2h (Braemar) and the weather could be quite different at that distance, so I decided to look North. I had been to Cruden Bay once before, with some friends, but for various reasons have no photos of the place. Actually, Cruden Bay, although nice, was not the real destination. I was headed for Slains Castle, which inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.

The weather was incredible, and the sights even moreso. The village of Cruden Bay is rather picturesque, with a wonderful, golden beach and numerous old buildings. Walking to the edge of the older part, you come to a path leading to the said castle. A path which leads you through a rather nice wooded area (although it is rather muddy underfoot) and out towards some spectacular cliffs. It's hard to say what is the more spectacular there - the ravages of nature on the cliff faces, inhabited by countless sea birds, or the ruins of the lair of Vlad the Impaler, Dracula.

Anyway, I'll be puting a photo or two of my day trip up on this website shortly, but meanwhile, have a look at my Flickr pages to see the pictures I took.

New Gallery

Just a quick note to point out that I've had to redesign the galleries page as I needed to add an extra gallery for Hebridean photos. This is due to the numerous new photos I took when I went there at Easter time, and the fact that adding an extra gallery when there were only 2 per line made it too awkward to navigate. To be honest, I preferred the old look, but this one works fine too. Hope you enjoy the photos.

New Photo Galleries

Just a quick post to say I've done a little work on the photo galleries. The animals gallery was getting unweildly and was far too large; so it has now beens split into two: pets and other animals that I may have seen here and there.

I've also taken some pictures of Agnieszka's family out of other categories and now created a special one just for them which is here. There are also a few other photos moved about or added, including a single new one of myself that I took with my video camera at the beach yesterday.

Changes

If you're observant, you may just have noticed a few changes to this site. It's mainly for future-proofing as much of the code on the old version has been "depracated" which means web-sites using it won't be visible to future generations of web-browsers. I took the oportunity for a bit of a radical re-design. I've also updated as much as possible to make it more a website for Agnieszka and I than just for me, especially as she's already blogging. Anyway, the blueness isn't all that's new here...

There are also several new photos on the site from my visit, last Saturday, to Edinburgh for a bit of Christmas Shopping and a lot of sight-seeing. There are new photos in the animals gallery (Edinburgh Zoo mainly) and in the Scottish places one. Hope you'll like it.

Any comments on the photos would be very welcome.

On This Day - more options

Hello. Just a quickish word to say I've added another two On This Day options to those already there beneath the date at the top of every post. When you click on the links, it'll take you to pages of things that happened on the same date that the post was made throughout history. The BBC is mainly news related, but also some history. Wikipedia is a rather random collection of history and odd facts and IMDB is information on what was happening in the movie world. What films were wrapping? What was top of the box-office etc. Fiddle about and have fun.

Oh, and Firefox is even better than I said in my previous post. Once you bother adding in all the extensions, it's quite incredible.

Just a very quick blog entry to thoroughly reccomend you upgrade from Internet Explorer to Firefox. It's basically the new version of Netscape. When AOL bought Netscape, they abandonned the web-browser. This open-source update is based on the last version of it and is superior in so many ways it's unbelievable. My favourite is the ability to add live bookmarks. If you're quick and already looking this up in Firefox, you'll notice an interesting symbol in the far bottom right of the window. Clicking there will add a live bookmark for my site (already set-up to allow this) so that when you cick on the bookmark for it, you get a list of my most recent headlines! You can even move these live bookmarks to the top of the browser beneath the address bar... and get a drop-down menu with the latest headlines. I've already got numerous BBC websites added with headlines for quite a few categories. Go on, have a look. You can even import your favourites from IE and so won't lose anything.

Just thought I'd take a minute to share the poster for the new Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith.

I'll assume Lucasfilm wanted people to spread the thing or they'd not have put it on their website ;-).

The official trailer will soon be available, and according to the few people who've seen a rough cut of the movie, this is one of the best, far better than Phantom Menace or Clones. For loads more Star Wars info, have a look at TheForce.Net.

I know a lot of people are eagerly anticipating this one as it'll (for them) exorcise the Phantoms of Menace and Clones, but I've been awaiting this one since I heard about the prequel project many years ago, and am really rather eagre to see the end result.

Hebrides Photographs.
Just a quick entry this time to say that there has been a significant addition to the Hebrides gallery, with an extra 12 photographs of historic monuments and natural landscapes on the Isle of Lewis. Highlights include the Calanais Stones, a Black-House Village and the Rodel Chapel. I'll soon be adding a special gallery for a pure "Awww" factor - animals, mainly Jupiter and Willow, but a fair showing from Czochra, Max and Angus too not to mention the odd other critter ;-)

She's such an amazing creature, certainly worth introducing to the World. From the moment when I first saw her on some July morning in 2001, I knew my life was going to change. She's not only a true friend always ready to listen and offer comfort when I need it most, but also the best anti-stress kit one could ever dream of. It only takes to look into her deep green eyes and life doesn't seem so unbearable any more. She's her drawbacks like anyone else but friendship is not about being perfect, is it. We've just learnt to respect our differences . I fully realise how difficult it's going to be to separate from her next year when I'll be moving to live with boyfriend but we'll always be friends and there'll always be a special place in my heart reserved exclusively for her. For my beloved cat, Czochra.

Black and White Aberdeen
Just a quick word to point out a new picture gallery which I've put on-line. It's pictures of Aberdeen in Black and White which I find rather nice looking. You may notice that a few photos are duplicates of ones in the normal Aberdeen Gallery; however, the ones in the older gallery shall be deleted in time to make way for new photos of the Granite City as I take them.
